The NFL Draft is a measured gamble. Teams do all the homework possible on players to make an educated investment into both the player's and team's future for success.
Unfortunately, even with all the time invested, mistakes are made every year, both on players that are given a fortune in compensation for very little in return and others that are given next to nothing and add great value on the field of play. For Tim Tebow and Jimmy Clausen, their "fortunes" went in different directions last week, based mostly on perceptions and in these two cases, perceptions are reality. The Denver Broncos have systematically changed the dynamics of their team, going from talented but brooding stars Jay Cutler and Brandon Marshall to a first round quarterback that is known as much for his need to improve his passing techniques as for his incredible work ethic and contagiously optimistic attitude. This work ethic and attitude took an otherwise late-round passer to the first round (25th overall pick). Jimmy Clausen was on the other side of the perception coin as he fell into the middle of the 2nd round when he was graded by experts to have first round talent. In Clausen's case, the perception that his leadership skills are lacking, gave teams pause to invest first round money into the Notre Dame star that arguably had the best professional training of all the available quarterbacks. Josh McDaniels and the Broncos are gambling that the intangibles of Tim Tebow are more valuable to a football team than the tangibles of Jimmy Clausen. Now we will all have to wait and watch if perceptions really are reality or vice versa. |
