Tebow Getting Better Advice At Broncos PDF Print E-mail

No one, including Tim Tebow himself, disagrees that Tebow’s mechanics need to change to become a better passer for improving his chances at success as an NFL quarterback. His agent even hired 4 private coaches to improve his techniques before the draft. The well-chronicled delivery changes were the focus of the NFL combine in February, but for the well-schooled quarterback or quarterback trainer, it was obvious that he was not getting good advice.

The big knock on him was how low he carried the ball and it looked like that is the one of the things that was supposedly improved. He certainly held it higher than he had in action at Florida, but he actually held it up that high in practice even back in 2007. I have the front-page newspaper story with pictures to prove it. But Tebow’s bigger problems lie more in his rotation as he throws the ball than in where he holds it.

In the June 14th issue of Sports Illustrated, Peter King’s “The Making of a Quarterback”, he writes about the McDaniels’ brother’s (and their father) work to improve his quarterback mechanics and the one’s written about in this article are significantly better for Tebow’s development. People don’t usually make a big deal about the front hand/arm of a quarterback, but it starts the motion and can start it well or poorly. Tebow’s front hand naturally gives him a bad start, as he raises his front elbow and turns his palm out to the target. Broncos Head Coach Josh McDaniels has given Tebow a towel to stuff under that front armpit to keep his elbow closer to his ribcage and shorten the front arm’s motion. The longer the front arm takes to get out of the way, the longer it will be before the throwing arm can bring the ball through. Tebow’s front arm also starts a very rotational motion, which results in the most over-rotated passing delivery I’ve ever seen. This was an issue not addressed by Tebow’s off-season QB trainers, but McDaniels has been keeping an exclusive camera on all of Tebow’s throws and noticed his “spinning like a top”. He told him to “Imagine you’re throwing darts and your body is spinning like this. You can’t have the control you want. How’s your release point going to stay the same?”

McDaniels has brought in his younger brother to be the Broncos’ QB coach and this seems to be a good thing as they should be on the same page with their fundamentals training, coming from the same football coach father. Tebow still has major balance issues that the towel in the armpit won’t fix, but it seems they are off to a good start.
